Gaya Defies Kano Emirate Shakeup With Protests

On Sunday, residents of Gaya staged a protest against the decision of the Kano State Government to dissolve the Gaya emirate.

The protesters reportedly took to the streets of Gaya to express their condemnation of the actions taken by the state government and the state House of Assembly.

Displaying placards with various messages and chanting slogans against the government, the protesters voiced their grievances, alleging political motives behind the dissolution of the emirate and denouncing what they perceived as injustice.

The decision to dissolve the emirate came after the Kano State Government repealed the Kano Emirates Council Law on Thursday. The law, initially used by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje to depose Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II in 2020, was repealed by the New Nigeria People’s Party-controlled House of Assembly.

Upon assenting to the law, Governor Abba Yusuf announced the dissolution of four additional emirates created by Ganduje, including Rano, Gaya, Karaye, and Bichi. The governor also instructed all affected monarchs, including Alhaji Aliyu Ibrahim Abdulkadir, the Emir of Gaya, to hand over their duties to Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, the Deputy Governor, who oversees the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

Reports indicate that one of the deposed emirs vacated his palace at midnight on Thursday, although there were no reports of violence or resistance in the town, given the presence of armed security personnel.

A resident named Abubakar Shuaibu expressed discontent with the situation, highlighting that some individuals were unhappy with the developments.
