Amid the ongoing hardship and high cost of living in the country, the Presidency has advised Nigerians to stop buying food items such as pepper and tomatoes at supermarkets.
Tope Fasua, the Special Adviser on Economic Affairs in the office of the vice president gave the admonition after doing a market survey at Utako Market in Abuja at the weekend.
He said Nigerians should stop complaining of high prices on social media and go to local markets to but their food items.
Posting the pictures on his Facebook page, Fasua wrote “Market survey 29.06.24.
Utako Market. Small portion of tomatoes N1500. Pepper 500. Plastic basket of like 5kg of tomatoes 11k. Thigh to leg of a goat (1 quarter) – 9k. 2kg of tozo beef N8500. Veggies N200 per portion”.
“Hey guys, get off social media sometimes and go to Market. If you are lazy to go they’ll be cheating you and social media panic will almost give you hypertension”.
“Naija is not dying. Don’t be buying tomatoes at supermarket and peppers at hotels. The roving motor park economist”.
Commenting on Fasua’s post, Ejimadu Lucky wrote “Oga asked the sellers how much they sold those items 13 months ago. So disgusting. I’m not surprised at such indignity.
You used to be an activist when things were far better but today at peak of corruption and economic degeneration you could come up with this analysis. It’s a shame how little money gets the better of Nigerians”.
Also commenting, Adeshina Samson wrote “The prices are going down now. You should have done this survey a month ago and see.
Why do you choose Abuja?. Go to Ilorin market and other city to do this survey. People are not smiling. People are not finding it easy to survive. The truth needs to be told to the president. Kenya protest will be a play. One day nah One day”.

Another Facebook user, Nelson Dominic wrote” I bought two cooked eggs in my Shasha – Akowonjo area of Lagos for #200 each just yesterday but was offered the same egg in same area for #300 each today; 50% increase in just 24 hours!
There is a serious food crisis in this country like has never been seen since war torn Biafra.Tell your principals the real truth … people are in pain ; so much money fetching so little.
A family of four can’t cook a decent meal that they can eat twice with # 15k ; that’s like 50% of minimum wage.
Declare a state of emergency on food now across borders; crash food related taxes by ,at least; 50% . Open the land borders and lets import without restrain staples that we aren’t yet fully sufficient on .
All our staples in Nigeria; rice, beans, gaari, bread, fufu, elubo, yam, tomato has all increased in price by over 200% to say the least.
A two digit increase in price of staples in Europe/ America will cause a mass action that will bring down even the best & strongest government. Save Our Souls”.
