The children of veteran Nigerian singer and actress Onyeka Onwenu have announced her passing and provided details about her final moments.

In a statement issued by her sons, Abraham and Tijani Ogunlende, they expressed their sorrow, revealing that Onwenu died on the night of July 30, 2024, in Lagos, Nigeria.

The statement highlighted that Onwenu had just finished performing at a birthday party for Mrs. Stella Okoli when she was suddenly rushed to Reddington Hospital in Lagos. Despite doctors’ best efforts to save her life, she passed away.

“She was rushed to the hospital after an amazing last performance, where doctors made every effort to save her life… sadly she passed,” her children said.

Her children described her as a “legend and icon” who inspired multiple generations through her music, acting, and humanitarian work.

They expressed deep gratitude to those who supported her during her final moments, including notable figures such as Peter Obi, John Momoh, and others. They also thanked the staff at Reddington Hospital for their efforts.

The family encouraged people to remember Onwenu for her significant contributions and impact.

“As we take the time to make the necessary plans, we would like you all to take the time to remember her life, the contributions she made and the impact she made on so many lives, including ours,” they said.

Onwenu, born in 1952 in Obosi, Anambra State, began her musical career with the album ‘For the Love of You’ in 1981 and was celebrated for hits like ‘One Love.’
