Dare-devil gunmen on Saturday night on Saturday night killed seven leaders in the Umucheke community in Okwe, located in the Onuimo Local Government Area of Imo State.
The assailants struck during a meeting at the home of the community’s president general, who was also among those murdered.
The Imo State Police Command confirmed the attack on Sunday. Spokesman Henry Okoye reported that Commissioner of Police Danjuma Aboki condemned the incident as deeply unfortunate and expressed the command’s sorrow over the tragedy.
An investigation has been launched to identify and apprehend those responsible for this heinous act and ensure they face justice.
The violence follows another recent attack in which gunmen ambushed and killed four policemen in the Irete community along Onitsha Road in Owerri, the state capital. The policemen were targeted while conducting a stop-and-search operation.
These incidents are part of a troubling trend of attacks on security agents and civilians in Imo State and the South-East region, which has seen numerous gunmen attacks in recent years.
