The Federal Government has said eight additional local government areas in Kano and Kebbi States are free from open defecation.
This was disclosed by Professor Joseph Utsev, Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, saying the National Task Group on Sanitation (NTGS) had declared these eight LGAs Open Defecation Free (ODF) across the two states.
Utsev explained that the NTGS, a multi-sectoral platform involving key stakeholders from relevant Ministries, Government Agencies, Development Partners, Non Governmental Organisations, and the media, validated and declared the eight LGAs ODF during its monthly meeting held in Abuja on September 18, 2024.
The newly declared ODF LGAs in Kano State include are: Kiru,Bagwai,Dawakin Tofa,Gaya,
Shanono,Gabasawa and Ungogo as well as Shanga, a LGA in Kebbi State.
This was contained in a statement on Thursday issued by Mrs. Funmi Imuetinyan, Director, Information and Public Relations in the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation.
With these additions, the Minister noted that the total number of ODF LGAs in the country now stands at 134.
This milestone, he said, underscores ongoing efforts to enhance public health, sanitation, and environmental sustainability across Nigeria.
