The University of Abuja has announced the appointment of Prof. Aisha Sani Maikudi as its seventh substantive Vice-Chancellor, effective January 1, 2025, for a non-renewable tenure of five years.
The announcement was made during the 77th Extraordinary Meeting of the Governing Council, chaired by Air Vice-Marshal Saddiq Ismaila Kaita (Rtd). This was confirmed in a statement released by the institution’s acting Director of Public Affairs, Habib Yakoob.
The statement read, “The Governing Council of the University of Abuja, under the chairmanship of Air Vice-Marshal Saddiq Ismaila Kaita (Rtd), has approved the appointment of Professor Aisha Sani Maikudi as the 7th Substantive Vice-Chancellor of the University.
“Maikudi emerged as the best among 10 shortlisted candidates interviewed by the Joint Council and Senate Selection Board of the University, in line with the extant regulations governing the process.”
The process leading to Maikudi’s appointment has been contentious, with allegations that she did not meet the required years of experience for the role. This led to divisions among members of the governing council, with some reportedly refusing to attend meetings convened to deliberate on the appointment.
Despite the protests and controversies, the council confirmed her selection, asserting the decision followed due process.
