The Super Falcons have maintained their position as Africa’s top-ranked women’s football team, holding onto 36th place globally in the latest FIFA rankings released on Thursday.

Despite not playing any matches since December, the nine-time African champions remain unmoved in both continental and global rankings, while some of their African rivals dropped positions.

Reigning WAFCON champions South Africa remain second in Africa but fell four spots globally to 54th. Morocco is third on the continent, ranked 60th worldwide, while Zambia dropped two places to 64th but remain Africa’s fourth-best team.

The latest rankings come ahead of the 2024 WAFCON tournament, set to take place from July 25 to 26 in Morocco. The Super Falcons will aim for a record-extending 10th title after finishing fourth in the previous edition.

Globally, the United States continue to lead the rankings, followed by reigning world champions Spain. Germany and England retain third and fourth place, while Japan climbed to fifth, pushing Sweden down to sixth.

On the African scene, Kenya made one of the biggest jumps, climbing seven places to 142nd, while Tunisia recorded the biggest drop, falling 11 places to 89th. Djibouti achieved their highest-ever ranking, moving up to 195th position.

The next FIFA women’s rankings will be released on June 12, with Nigeria hoping to climb higher ahead of the WAFCON tournament.
