Obaseki Starts Payment Of ₦70,000 Minimum Wage

In line with Governor Godwin Obaseki’s commitment to raising the minimum wage starting from May 2024, the Edo State administration has initiated the payment of the new ₦70,000 minimum wage to its workers.

The announcement of the wage increase was made by Governor Obaseki during the recent inauguration of the Labour House in Benin City, the state capital, as a measure to alleviate the economic challenges faced by the people of the state.

Confirming this development, Chris Nehikhare, the State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, stated in a Sunday statement that the state government has disbursed May salaries to workers, reflecting the implementation of the new minimum wage.

Nehikhare emphasized that the payment of the ₦70,000 minimum wage underscores the administration’s dedication to the welfare of Edo workers. He encouraged workers to remain dedicated to their duties and contribute effectively to ensuring the successful conclusion of Governor Obaseki’s tenure, while also acknowledging the government’s gesture towards their welfare.

“The Edo State Government has paid the May salaries of workers in the state, reflecting the implementation of the N70,000 new minimum wage.

“This is in fulfillment of the promise made by Governor Godwin Obaseki to increase the minimum wage from N40,000 to N70,000 beginning this May, as part of efforts to cushion the impacts of the harsh economy occasioned by fuel subsidy removal and other economic decisions by the Federal Government.

“It is also in furtherance of the commitment of the state government to meet its statutory obligation even before the end of the month”, he said.
