At last, the federal government, Thursday, inaugurated the governing councils of universities, polytechnics and other federal tertiary institutions in the country. The inauguration came barely one year after the government dissolved the governing councils of all of its tertiary institutions, leaving them to operate without governing councils. Recall that President Bola Tinubu, in June 2023, shortly after being sworn in as president, announced the dissolution of governing councils of federal tertiary institutions, leaving them to operate for almost a year without governing councils. Lecturers in the nation’s public universities had on June,19,2024, picked a hole in the inability of the…
President Bola Tinubu is scheduled to inaugurate the construction work of the 1000-km Sokoto-Badagry Coastal Highway in August. The Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, disclosed this during a stakeholder engagement on the project in Birnin Kebbi. Umahi said that he was directed by the president to come to Kebbi with some ministers and members of the National Assembly to unveil the scope of the project. “The project is the old West African Trade Route, and the processes for the commencement of the construction of the 1000km six-lane super highway are in progress. ”Kebbi State has the lion share of the…
By Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, SAN Founded in August, 1998, the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, used to pride itself as the largest political party in Africa, whatever that means. It was founded by eminent citizens like Chief Solomon Lar, Dr. Alex Ekwueme and many others. Broadly speaking, the PDP represents a centre right political entity, adopting a neoliberal economic status dressed in ultra conservatism, thus favouring free market policies which support economic liberalism. It easily won the February 1999 election, fielding retired former military leader, General Olusegun Obasanjo to pair with a retired customs officer, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. It would later win…
Around 235 million Pounds (298 million dollars) is expected to be withdrawn from ATMs on Thursday as people fit trips to cash machines around casting their general election votes. This is according to a forecast from UK cash access and cash machine network Link reported on Wednesday. The network expects the total to be lower than it was in Dec. 12, 2019, when the last general election was held. On that date, which resulted in Boris Johnson returning to Downing Street as Conservative Prime Minister, 322 million Pounds was withdrawn. The Link said that early December was tended to be…
The Governor Godwin Obaseki’s Sobe Maize Farm has turned a dangerous zone that has been taken over by kidnappers. Interrogating Obaseki’s numerous unkept promises to the people of Edo State in a statement, Media Consultant to the All Progressives Congress (APC) Governorship Campaign Council for the September 21, 2024 election, Prince Kassim Afegbua, said four years after the campaign promise, ‘no single maize tree is standing there’ According to Afegbua: “The Sobe Maize Farm which they campaigned with in 2020 is most unkempt, overgrown with weeds and has become a habitat for kidnappers and armed bandits. Not a single Maize…
The Kano State House of Assembly has described as fake speculation that it has not reopened for plenary over security, emanating from the recurring emirate tussle issues. The spokesperson to the Speaker, Kamaluddeen Shawai, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday that the viral news “is simply fake and baseless.” Shawai urged the good people of the state to disregard any report insinuating that the assembly has not reopened for plenary due to insecurity caused by emirate tussle. “The purported fear of attacks and delay in resuming the plenary are nothing but the works of mischievous elements within…
A Recital Of Governor Obaseki’s Numerous Sins (Part 1)
By Kassim Afegbua A visit to Edo state today, will bring even the least discerning to the consternations that forged my invective writing, each time I talked about Edo State and its current government. Two dominant features, lethargy and deceit will greet anyone on arrival in Benin City. The people suffer daily struggles, for the government is asleep whenever they are not looting. From the airport, visitors will be greeted with a poster of Governor Obaseki’s “audio” performance; what is displayed on the poster is hung on the street light poles erected during Adams Oshiomhole’s government. The rot that Governor…

The News Agency of Nigerian (NAN) recalls that President Bola Tinubu had on May 30 inaugurated the commercial operations of the ARMT and announced free ride until Dec. 30. “As I speak to you today, we are recording not less than 4,000 to 5,000 passengers, who are using that train service to the various communities along the…
The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has demanded immediate dissolution of the governing councils of universities recently announced by the federal government. Members of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University branch of ASUU, who took to the streets with placards on Tuesday, urged President Bola Tinubu to reverse the decision, arguing that due process was not followed in the appointments. UNIZIK ASUU chairman, Comrade Kingsley Uboji, who addressed reporters after marching round the university, also urged the president to implement the renegotiated 2009 ASUU/FG agreement. Uboji said: “Our union condemns the dissolution of the former governing councils without due process. Governing…
