The Academic Staff Union of Universities has joined the ongoing strike by the organised labour comprising Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress. This is coming after the Federal Government failed to meet the unions’ minimum wage demand. In a statement addressed to the branch chairpersons and zonal coordinators of ASUU on Monday, the association’s President, Emmanuel Osodeke, directed lecturers in universities across the country to join the strike as an affiliate of the congress. Ten people in Antsa community have been injured following an attack by suspected herdsmen on Monday morning. Antsa community is located on the North Bank – J.S. Tarka University of Agriculture, Makurdi, busy road in Benue state. The road also provides access for those traveling to Gbajimba in Guma Local Government Area. As early as 7 a.m. on Monday, youths mounted roadblocks on the busy University Community road. They prevented vehicles and motorcycles from passing through. The striking labour union has deliberately shutdown the national grid, which has resulted in a nationwide outage. The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) made this known in a statement by its Public Affairs Manager, Ndidi Mbah in Abuja on Monday morning. The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, (SAN), has faulted the organised labour over the nationwide strike it is starting today (Monday). Four traders have reportedly lost their lives due to severe rainstorms accompanied by strong winds at the IBB Square in Bauchi state, which hosted the recently concluded North East Trade Fair. The Kogi State Government has announced the rescue of the remaining eight kidnapped students of Confluence University of Science and Technology, Osara (CUSTECH) Bringing the numbers of rescued students to 30. Recall 32 students were abducted inside the school premises early last month while preparing for the commencement of their exams. The Federal Government said the N494,000 new minimum wage proposed by the organized labour could cripple Nigeria’s economy. The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris disclosed this during a press briefing in Abuja. The minister lamented that the N494,000 minimum wage demand would amount to a N9.5 trillion expenditure burden to the government. According to him, they had agreed to increase the country’s minimum wage by 100 percent to N60,000 from N30,000 in line with the current economic realities.
