The Labour Strike And FG’s Inertia – The Way Forward
By Prof. Mike Ozekhome (SAN) Labour has literally grounded Nigeria – from airports, hospitals, tertiary institutions, to electricity which has plunged the biggest black nation on earth into total darkness. I am in full, complete and total support of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress’ (TUC)’s current national strike for upward review of the FG’s proposed minimum wage of N60,000 per month. NLC and TUC had also demanded that the government reverses the increase in electricity tariff to N65/KWH. When talks broke down with none of the parties shifting grounds, Labour commenced a strike action on…

Kuda Microfinance Bank and OPay have resumed onboarding new customers. The Financial technology (Fintech) companies announced this in a separate statement on Monday. They said the development comes after the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has authorised them to start enrolling users. Recall that CBN directed fintech companies to pause enrollment of new customers on April 29. This followed the federal government’s effort to address illicit foreign exchange transactions in the country as well as operations of Binance and other cryptocurrency exchange platforms. In a ruling delivered on April 24, a federal high court in Abuja granted an interim order…

The National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, Obiora Ifoh, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday in Lagos State. Ifoh said that the strike was not an option, noting that it would cause more hardship and suffering. He stated, “Our immediate reaction is that organised labour should not throw Nigerians into more hardship. “Nigerians are already grappling with a lot of challenges and we do…
