Relentless downpours and howling winds hampered Wednesday’s search for survivors of landslides that struck Indian tea plantations and killed 122 people, most believed to be labourers and their families. Days of torrential monsoon rains have battered the southern coastal state of Kerala, with blocked roads into the disaster area in Wayanad district complicating relief efforts. By Ismail Omipidan In June, 2024, precisely June 9, I bought a small basket of Irish potatoes for N20, 000. However, by yesterday, I bought the same quantity for N6, 000 at the Asokoro extension Market. This, no doubt, negates the long-held notion that whatever goes up in Nigeria hardly comes down. The reason for this sudden economic twist, I reckon, is government intervention in the face of free-fall of prices of goods. By implication, it means things will get better in Nigeria. Can these things get better through protest? I don’t think so. If anything, protest would compound the…

By Prof Mike Ozekhome, SAN, CON, OFR Till date, I have not still been able to finish reading this enigma’s epic, “The Man Died”, since I picked it up in 1979 (45 whole years ago). It is a 1972 non-fiction book exploring his experiences in prison during his 22 months imprisonment by federal authorities for hobnobbing with the Biafran successionist leader, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu. I just pity literary Lilliputians like me. I am referring  to Professor Akinwade Oluwole Soyinka, an unusual homo sapien. The likes of him – such as Gani Fawehinmi, Chinua Achebe, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, Ayodele Awojobi, Bala Usman,…
