Gunmen have ambushed and killed four policemen in the Irete community along Onitsha Road in Owerri, the Imo State capital. According to sources, the gunmen attacked the policemen who were on stop-and-search duty in the area. A Point of Sale (PoS) operator was also reportedly killed in the ambush by daredevil gunmen. Police spokesman in the state Henry Okoye confirmed the unfortunate incident. He said four policemen were killed and not six. The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has called on the government and the organisers and supporters of the planned hardship demonstration to call off the protest and embrace dialogue to turn around the plight of the Nigerian people for good. The NBA also called on members of the National and State Houses of Assembly to immediately engage with their constituents based on the plans of government at the federal and subnational levels to address the demands of the people. The comedian whose real name is Oluseyi Aletile was appointed as a Senior Special Assistant (Entertainment & Tourism) to the governor. The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has directed police top brass to protect intending participants of the planned #EndBadGovernance protest slated for August 1 to 10, 2024. This was contained in a response letter by the IGP to the request of human rights lawyer Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa. Adegboruwa, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), had on July 26, 2024 written the IGP to provide police coverage for protesters. Prices of cement may likely be reduced, the founder and chairman of the BUA Group, Abdul Samad Rabiu has said. Rabiu who said the prevailing price of cement in the country is the most friendly compared to what obtains in other African countries, however, emphasized that with a strengthened naira, the current price would be further reduced.
