The Congress of University Academics (CONUA) has called on the Federal Government to pay outstanding salaries, promotion arrears, and other benefits owed its members. The congress made the call in a communiqué read after its Second National Executive Council meeting yesterday in Benin. The communiqué, read by the President, Dr Niyi Sunmonu, worried over the continued withholding of three and a half months’ salary due to the strike action embarked upon by ASUU. The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, on Sunday ordered an immediate suspension of the proposed enforcement of the e-CMR initially scheduled to commence on July 29. The suspension, the IGP said, is to give ample opportunity for mass enlightenment and education of all citizens and residents on the process, benefits and effectiveness in solving the challenge of vehicle related crimes, and protection of individual and corporate vehicle ownership. A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Dr Olisa Agbakoba, has faulted the the agitation for the creation of additional states in the South-East, insisting it would not solve the problem of the region. Rather than create more states, Agbakoba, a former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, said the National Assembly should amend the constitution or put together a completely new one that would return Nigeria to regional governments. Spain struck late to win Euro 2024 with a 2-1 victory over England on Sunday in Berlin to capture the trophy for a record fourth time. Real Sociedad striker Mikel Oyarzabal turned home in the 86th minute after Nico Williams sent Spain ahead early in the second half but England substitute Cole Palmer pulled the Three Lions level. Residents of the Sabo area in Osogbo, the capital of Osun state, were gripped with fear on Sunday, July 14, when an abandoned building, allegedly used by hoodlums, collapsed. Five people were reportedly trapped inside when the building collapsed around 7:30 am. The uncompleted, abandoned storey building had been used by hoodlums as an abode before its collapse.
