Seven mass transit buses were set on fire on Thursday in Potiskum, Yobe State, during the #EndBadGovernance protests. The buses were torched on the grounds of the local government secretariat. Witnesses reported that a group attempted to create chaos but was quickly restrained by security forces. Organised Civil Society on Thursday knocked the Nigeria Police Force for tear-gassing “defenceless protesters” in Lagos, Abuja, Kaduna, Bauchi, and other states in the country. The Borno State Government has declared a 24-hour curfew across the state following a tragic explosion at Kawori Market in the Konduga area on Wednesday night. Hundreds of youths have begun the #EndBadGovernaceInNigeria protest in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital. The protesters gathered at the Rumuola Junction along Aba Road and gradually built up to over 100 before starting the protest. Protest against the President Bola Tinubu led government over bad governance has erupted in Kano State. The protesters who are mostly youth stormed the entrance of the Kano State government house chanting “Bamuyi” which implies “no to bad governance” and “chanji muke so” meaning “we want change”. Dozens of protesters have gathered at the Ikeja underbridge in Lagos. They are singing, dancing, and planning to march to other areas in Ikeja. The organisers, many of whom are young people, have expressed frustration with economic conditions and have announced a series of demonstrations. There is a significant security presence, including patrol vans, anti-riot trucks, and police vehicles.
Lagos is currently under a heavy security presence as the nationwide protest scheduled for August 1st commences. Roads and streets are noticeably deserted, save for a few commercial buses.
