Justice Deinde I. Dipeolu of the Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, on Monday, July 15, 2024, ordered the final forfeiture of 20 cars stolen from Canada to Nigeria. The cars are forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria. The Judge gave the order following a motion on notice filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC. Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja has reinstated Philip Shaibu as Deputy Governor of Edo State months after he was removed from the position. In a judgment, Justice Omotoso said the impeachment by the Edo State House of Assembly was illegal and unconstitutional. The judge held that the impeachment was in gross violation of the Constitution. Aside from restoring Shaibu, the court also ordered that his salaries and allowances should be paid to him from April.
The Legislative arm of Egor Local Government Area in Edo State has impeached the council’s chairman, Hon. Eghe Ogbemudia, over alleged padding of the council’s supplementary budget and other allegations of corruption. The impeachment was consequent upon a vote of no confidence against the chairman during a session of the legislative arm of the council on Tuesday. Five suspected cultists have been arrested at the Kogi State Polytechnic, the school’s management said on Wednesday. The suspects were nabbed on Tuesday during the ongoing second semester examination for the 2023/2024 academic session. Disclosing this in a statement, the polytechnic’s spokesman, Uredo Omale, said three students of the institution were also apprehended by the school’s security team, for allegedly peddling hard drugs among other offences. Former Kogi governor Yahaya Bello has asked the Federal High Court, Abuja, to adjourn, indefinitely, the ongoing case instituted against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission(EFCC). He also asked the court to vacate its arrest order on him, pending the determination of an appeal he filed at the Court of Appeal, Abuja. Bello’s demands are contained in a letter written by Musa Yakubu, his Counsel, who is a Senior Advocate of Nigeria(SAN). FIFA said on Wednesday it was opening an investigation into racist chants by Argentina players after they won the Copa America. “FIFA is aware of a video circulating on social media and the incident is being looked into. Canadian Rapper, Aubrey Graham, popularly known as Drake, Toronto home (The Embassy) has been overtaken by severe rainstorms in Toronto. The singer shared a video of his home on his Instagram Stories on Wednesday. In the video, Drake’s 50,000 square-foot mansion, designed by Canadian architect Ferris Rafauli, appears to be significantly affected by the flooding. Operatives of the Nigerian Navy Ship Beecroft have arrested eight suspected stowaways during their attempt to board two-speed boats. Unknown to the suspects, the patrol team of NNS Beecroft had sighted them during a patrol conducted on July 13, 2024. With the latest arrest, NNS Beecroft which is in Lagos has so far apprehended 33 stowaways between January and July. An Appeal Court sitting in Ibadan, yesterday, dismissed the appeal filed by the former Oyo State Deputy Governor, Engr. Rauf Olaniyan against his wrongful impeachment on July 18, 2022, over allegations of gross misconduct and financial impropriety. A 7-man panel led by Justice Christopher Kayode found Olaniyan guilty of the allegations and the Oyo State House of Assembly ratified his removal.
