The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has called off the two-week warning strike that it issued last week for all public institutions in the country. ASUU made this known on Wednesday during a press conference at its headquarters in Abuja. ASUU President Chris Piwuna, who gave a prepared speech to reporters, stated that the development was the result of the Senate’s involvement and the efforts of a few other well-meaning Nigerians. However, he said the National Executive Council of the union resolved to give the government a one-month window to address all contending issues.

The Federal Government says the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) remains the requisite requirement for admission into tertiary institutions in Nigeria. This was contained in a statement made available by the spokesperson for the Federal Ministry of Education, Boriowo Folasade. She disputed allegations that the government had cancelled the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), stating that the Ministry had never issued or authorised such a statement. “For the avoidance of doubt, JAMB remains the statutory and legally empowered body responsible for conducting entrance examinations and coordinating admissions into all tertiary institutions in Nigeria,” the statement read. “The established admission…
Madagascar’s political landscape shifted dramatically this week as Colonel Michael Randrianirina, the 51-year-old commander of the elite CAPSAT unit, was sworn in as president, following a military intervention that forced President Andry Rajoelina to flee the country. The ceremony at the High Constitutional Court in Antananarivo on Friday, October 17, 2025, formalised his appointment, drawing sharp international attention and raising concerns about the island nation’s democratic future. The crisis erupted amid mass youth-led protests that began on September 25, driven by frustrations over chronic power and water shortages. The demonstrations turned deadly, with the United Nations reporting at least 22…
The Senate, on Thursday afternoon, confirmed Professor Joash Amupitan as the new chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The confirmation of Amupitan was done through a voice vote by the lawmakers after undergoing screening and answering questions posed by members of the Senate for almost two hours. President Bola Tinubu had nominated Amupitan for the chairmanship of INEC following the exit of Prof. Mahmood Yakubu about two weeks ago. Amupitan, who was accompanied to the parliament by Kogi State governor, Ahmed Ododo, and others, was grilled by the lawmakers after presenting his profile to them.
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, said he got President Bola Tinubu’s permission to be absent during the Council of State meeting. Prof. Joash Amupitan was nominated as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission during the meeting. Wike stated this during the commissioning of the Access Roads in Sector Centre B, Dakibiyu District, in Abuja. He dismissed as false and mischievous reports that he deliberately boycotted the meeting over dissatisfaction with the appointment of the new INEC. “On Thursday, we had a flag off and I told the Minister of State, FCT, to represent me…
