Barring last minute’s change, the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, may shut down universities tomorrow over the non-payment of four months withheld salaries by the government. Recall that a fortnight ago, the Joint Action Committee, JAC, comprising SSANU and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions, NASU, had issued a two week ultimatum to the Federal Government to pay its members the four months withheld salaries. The House of Representatives yesterday asked the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, FCCPC, to immediately halt the unfair business practices perpetrated against Air Peace, Dangote and other businesses by certain foreign businesses operating in Nigeria. It also mandated the committees on aviation, commerce, and petroleum (upstream and downstream) to investigate the circumstances surrounding the predatory pricing practices and unethical business competitive behaviours by foreign airlines and IOCs. Five men standing trial for the abduction and murder of a Fulani herder, Ibrahim Adamu, who until his death was selling cows at Owode-Ede, Osun State, were on Tuesday sentenced to death by hanging by an Osun State High Court. After Adamu’s abduction, he was said to have been moved into a secluded place in his Toyota Corolla car. The victim was later killed despite paying N3 million ransom after he identified one of the perpetrators of the crime. The Edo State Government has issued a notice of retrieval to former Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu to return twenty two (22) vehicles belonging to the State Government. The notice was contained in a statement signed and released on July 2, 2024 by the State Commissioner for Communications and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare. Chris Nehikhare said the notice takes effect immediately and has a lifeline of seven (7) days. He revealed that the relevant security agencies have been put on alert to retrieve the vehicles upon the expiration of the notice.
