The Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, has condemned the mob attack and killing of travelers in the state who were accused of kidnapping. The victims, who were reportedly hunters traveling for Sallah, were intercepted by a mob in Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area.
The mob, after finding dane guns used by hunters in the victims’ vehicle, concluded they were kidnappers and set them ablaze. A viral video of the incident showed the victims surrounded by youths before being burned alive.
The governor described the act as barbaric and vowed that those responsible would be held accountable. Speaking in Uromi through the Chief Security Officer, Government House, SP Solomon Osaghale, the governor emphasised the importance of a thorough investigation to ensure justice and prevent future occurrences.
The investigation revealed that the victims had boarded a commercial truck, which was stopped by local security personnel. Upon searching the vehicle, the guns were discovered, leading to the violent attack by the mob.
The governor reiterated that no one has the right to take another’s life and expressed concern over the nature of the killings. He assured the public that those involved would face justice, as the Commissioner of Police has been directed to conduct a full-scale investigation. Over four people have been arrested in connection with the incident.
He also urged calm and reassured law-abiding residents of Uromi, particularly the Hausa community, that they should continue with their daily activities as security forces have been deployed to restore peace and order in the area.
