Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has praised the Super Eagles for their resilience and sportsmanship during their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match against Zimbabwe on Tuesday.

In a post on X.com on Wednesday, Obi, who attended the match in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, expressed his admiration for the players’ dedication and fighting spirit.

Obi wrote, “Yesterday, I travelled to Uyo, Akwa Ibom state capital, where I joined other sport-enthusiastic Nigerians to support the Super Eagles as they faced the Warriors of Zimbabwe in their sixth match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.”

“As always, our team demonstrated the true Nigerian spirit—strength, resilience, and dedication on the field. Football, and sports in general, have continued to serve as a powerful unifying force in our country, which is often challenged by disunity,” he added.

Although the Super Eagles did not secure a win, Obi emphasized their sportsmanship and the positive impact they had on the nation. He further noted, “While we may not have clinched victory on the field, our players have once again won our hearts with their clear display of sportsmanship.”

Obi concluded his message by expressing appreciation for the national team and everyone involved in the journey, saying, “I sincerely appreciate our national football team and all those whose efforts and sacrifices have contributed to our progress. Our labors were not in vain.”

In the match, Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the 2026 World Cup faced a setback following a 1-1 draw with Zimbabwe at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo. Despite a breakthrough goal from Victor Osimhen in the 74th minute, Zimbabwe equalized in stoppage time, leaving Nigeria with a frustrating draw. Fans expressed mixed reactions, highlighting issues with team coordination, finishing, and over-reliance on individual talent.
