Tiwa Savage Claims She Was Stopped From Performing In Nigeria Over ‘Indecent Dressing’

Tiwa Savage, the popular singer, recounted her early struggles upon returning to Nigeria from the United Kingdom to pursue her music career. She detailed how she faced obstacles in performing at concerts due to her outfits being deemed “too risqué.”

Speaking in a recent interview with BET, the ‘Koroba’ hitmaker disclosed that some of her earlier music videos were also not broadcasted for being considered indecent.

“When I first moved back,” she explained, “I would turn up at a show and they would say I can’t perform because my outfit was too risqué. It was a cultural issue. Even some of my first music videos were not aired on television because they were deemed indecent. I wasn’t even wearing bikinis.”

Despite facing criticism and setbacks, Tiwa Savage remained resolute. “Despite the setbacks, I was still stubborn,” she said. “My dresses were getting more revealing. It was just getting worse. They were bashing me online.”

However, she noted a shift in attitude over time. “It was funny because the females were secretly falling in love with me and my style. They couldn’t deny it. My fanbase, my followers, were growing. So they had to put me on shows and play my music because there was a demand for it.”

In a separate revelation, Tiwa Savage shared the inspiration behind her newly unveiled movie, “Water & Garri.” During a pre-launch press conference at Livespot Entertainment, she disclosed that the idea for the movie came to her while she was intoxicated. “I said this before, this is an idea I had in my head when I was drunk in my room,” she said. “And when I brought the idea to my amazing team, they didn’t make me feel stupid. They just said this is a brilliant idea.”
