A major power outage caused by technical faults in some feeders operated by the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) has affected at least 53 locations, including the Presidential Villa.
The outage, which impacted several parts of the Abuja metropolis, disrupted transmission to the R4 Injection Substation at Three Arm Zone, Aso Drive, which supplies electricity to the Presidential Villa.
In an announcement on Friday, AEDC acknowledged the situation and appealed to customers for patience, assuring them that engineers were working to restore power as soon as possible.
The affected areas include CKC Gwagwalada, Kuje Road, Almat Farms, Kiran Farm, Efugo, Kwali Road, L5 Injection Substation, Chukuku Environs, Premium Farm, El-Rufai Estate, Daghiri, Kuje Extension, John Calvin Estate, Kings Court, Karmo District, and Idu Industrial.
Others impacted by the outage include Urban Shelter Katampe, Living Faith Church Katampe, Jahi Village, Katampe Extension, Gishiri, Mabushi, Navy Estate, NAF Conference Center, Lake View Phase 1 & 2, Custom Quarters, Brains and Hammer City Estate, Katsina Estate, Paradise Estate, and parts of Gwarinpa, among others.
This blackout is the latest in a series of outages caused by faulty feeders. Recent findings revealed that at least 188 locations under AEDC’s franchise in the Federal Capital Territory suffered from power disruptions due to technical faults between January 1 and February 11, 2025.
The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, recently expressed concern over the deteriorating state of electricity infrastructure. Speaking at the public presentation of the National Integrated Electricity Policy and Nigeria Integrated Resource Plan on Thursday, he criticized electricity distribution companies for their lack of investment in network improvements.
He accused the Discos of prioritizing short-term profits over long-term infrastructure development, noting that their reluctance to invest and weak financial standing have hampered progress in the sector.
“This year, we are focusing on restructuring the Discos. We are going to carry out major reforms, addressing their poor investment strategies,” the minister stated.
