Rights activist Aisha Yesufu has urged lawmakers in the Red Chamber to impeach Senate President Godswill Akpabio for mocking citizens when they were planning the hunger protest now ravaging the country.
Yesufu, BringBackOurGirls (BBOG) Convener, posted on X (Twitter) that Senators will not encounter resistance if they decide to get rid of the man who said in a viral video that aggrieved Nigerians willing to protest can go ahead, “but let us be here eating.”
Akpabio has since hired a communication consultant to work back his comment without impressing many people, as he could not deny making the insensitive statement and the video did not lie nor could he claim it was doctored.
“Dear Senators. It is time to impeach Godswill Akpabio. It is still one of you that will replace him as Senate President,” Yesufu wrote.
“You will not encounter any resistance. Propaganda cannot work on people that are hungry. The growling of their stomach will drown out the noise and they won’t be able to hear the propaganda.”
Akpabio was seen in the video mocking youths planning to hit the streets on August 1 to protest against Bola Tinubu for misallocating resources and by that contributes to the lack of citizen’s purchasing power besides hyper inflation.
“Let us be here eating” because the protest would last only a short time, he stressed.
Senators earn salary and allowances worth N30 million per month, according to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC). It is likely that, Akpabio, as a principal officer, earns more than the rank and file.
