The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has reiterated the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to rid the nation of criminal elements trying to disrupt peace and security of the country.

Egbetokun spoke shortly after handing over rescued medical students of the Universities of Jos and Maiduguri, who were abducted in Benue State a week ago, to their respective Vice Chancellors in Abuja on Sunday.

“We remain resolute in our commitment to rid our nation of criminal elements who seek to disrupt the peace and security of society,” Egbetokun said.

“The Nigerian Police Force will continue to employ every lawful means at its disposal to protect the lives and properties of all Nigerians.”

The IGP reassured Nigerians and all persons resident in the country that the force will remain vigilant, proactive, and relentless in its pursuit of a safer Nigeria where the security of persons remain a top priority.

He said that the force will not rest until every citizen and resident can go about their daily lives free from fear and intimidation.

The Vice Chancellors of the Universities of Jos and Maduguri appreciated the police and other security agencies for the rescue mission.

Parents of the victims and the Benue State government equally expressed their appreciations to the security agencies for the prompt rescue of the students.

After seven days in captivity, the medical students comprising of 16 males and 4 females, who were abducted while on transit to a conference in Enugu on the15th of August, 2024, were handed over to their Vice Chancellors.

Seven others who had also fallen victim to the kidnappers also regained their freedom.

Channels Television reported on Friday that the students were rescued by security operatives after their abduction in Benue State en route Enugu.

The operation was coordinated by the office of the National Security Adviser.

Security agencies – the police, DSS and military personnel and equipment were involved in the operation, with the support of the Benue State government.

The victims were said to be on their way to Enugu State, passing through the Otukpo Local Government area in Benue before they encountered bandits.
