Airtel Nigeria’s Chief Executive Officer, Dinesh Balsingh, has stated that a 300 percent increase in operational costs over the past 18 to 24 months has made tariff adjustments essential for the telecom sector’s long-term sustainability.

Highlighting the economic challenges facing the industry, Balsingh explained that tariffs have remained unchanged for over a decade despite significant increases in operating expenses. To address these challenges, Nigerian telecom operators have submitted a proposal to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for a 100 percent tariff hike.

“For over a decade, tariffs have remained static despite the dramatic increase in operating expenses, which have surged by over 300 percent in the last 18 to 24 months alone. To continue providing high-quality services and meeting the growing demand for digital connectivity, it has become essential to realign our pricing structure with economic realities,” Balsingh stated.

He also emphasized the need for substantial investments to maintain and upgrade telecommunications infrastructure, citing the growing demand for digital services in sectors such as education, banking, and healthcare.

“The increasing demand for digital services requires us to continually upgrade our networks. These investments come at a cost, one that must be shared proportionally to guarantee long-term viability,” he said.

Balsingh highlighted that the proposed tariff adjustments are designed not only to sustain the sector but also to enhance service delivery for consumers.

“By enabling us to expand coverage, strengthen network security, and introduce cutting-edge technologies, these adjustments will directly enhance the quality of connectivity for Nigerians. Our priority is to ensure that no one is left behind in the country’s digital transformation journey,” he explained.

The CEO also reassured consumers that the tariff changes would be implemented with affordability in mind to minimise their financial burden.

“Our commitment to quality service remains unwavering. While significant tariff adjustments have become necessary, we understand the importance of gradual implementation to support our customers’ financial positions. This step will enable us to invest in capacity, expand coverage, and enhance service delivery, ensuring Nigeria remains competitive in the global digital landscape,” Balsingh concluded.

He reiterated Airtel’s dedication to supporting Nigeria’s vision of becoming a digital economy leader in Africa, fostering innovation, and driving inclusive growth.
