Dr. Bukola Saraki, former President of the Senate, has called for stricter measures to protect electricity infrastructure in Nigeria.

The former Kwara State governor, while sympathising with millions of businesses that have been affected by the power outage in parts of northern Nigeria, said the development has led to severe hardship for families and businesses as a result of economic losses, calling on the government to evolve measures to protect power facilities from vandals.

Also, Dr Saraki, while speaking through his X handle, called for greater investment and reforms in the electricity sector in order to ensure steady power supply.

He said; “I sympathise with the millions of families, businesses, and communities that have been affected by the prolonged blackout in many parts of northern Nigeria.

“These disruptions have led to significant hardship and substantial financial losses and hindered daily life and economic activities. Now, more than ever, this situation reinforces the urgent need for several key actions by the government.

“First, the government must prioritize the immediate restoration of power to the affected areas. Reliable electricity is essential for both daily life and economic growth.

“Second, stronger measures and community support are needed to prevent further vandalism of critical infrastructure. These acts of destruction only exacerbate the challenges faced by the affected states. In this regard, stricter measures must be adopted to prevent further vandalism; and

“Finally, the blackout highlights the urgent need for comprehensive reform within the power sector. Investing in modernizing and upgrading our national infrastructure is crucial to ensuring a reliable and resilient power supply for all.

“By addressing these key issues, the government can alleviate the suffering caused by the blackout and work towards a more stable and prosperous future for all Nigerians.”
