Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has assured his colleagues in the 10th Senate that he will remain an ambassador of the Senate as he transitions to driving governance from the executive branch.

Speaking during a valedictory session held in his honor in Abuja on Thursday, Governor Okpebholo reflected on his journey, beginning as a Senator in June 2023 and transitioning to Governor following his victory in the September 21 Edo State gubernatorial election declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

In an emotional speech, Okpebholo expressed gratitude for the support and camaraderie he experienced during his time in the Senate.

“Distinguished colleagues, this is quite emotional for me,” he began. “From the moment I joined this 10th Senate, every moment in the Red Chamber has remained memorable. Barely one year after joining, I left to pursue the dream of becoming Governor. Today, I am Governor of Edo State.

“There is no way my story can be told without my distinguished colleagues here. The support, advice, and prayers I received were extraordinary.

“I want to particularly thank the uncommon Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, GCFR, whose support and encouragement throughout my campaign period were truly remarkable.

“To my distinguished Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, your words of advice were invaluable. To Senate Majority Leader Senator Opeyemi Bamidele and other principal officers, I say thank you.

“Even as Governor, the memories of the 10th Senate will remain with me. One thing I assure you is that I will remain your ambassador as I drive governance from the executive branch of government.”

Okpebholo noted that his involvement in legislative affairs had fueled his passion for governance, particularly in the areas of infrastructure development, security, education, and health.

During the session, Senators praised Okpebholo for his humility, dedication, and transformative leadership.

They highlighted his achievements as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Public Procurement, where he prioritised compliance with procurement laws and ensured value for money in public spending.

Senator Adams Oshiomhole (APC, Edo North) described Okpebholo as the “new Progressive Sheriff in town,” commending his swift governance. Oshiomhole noted that within his first 30 days as Governor, Okpebholo restored respect for traditional institutions and addressed critical infrastructural challenges in Edo State.

“In just 30 days, Edo people knew that a new governor is in town—humble, intelligent, active, and committed,” Oshiomhole said, adding that Okpebholo’s humility and results-driven leadership left an indelible impression.

Senator Danjuma Goje (APC, Gombe Central) urged Okpebholo to remain focused, stating, “You will never regret being committed, resolute, and determined, even when faced with challenges.” He also advised Okpebholo to unite Edo’s political landscape, which is currently divided into two camps led by powerful individuals.

Senators lauded Okpebholo’s transformative agenda, noting his inclusive governance and commitment to integrity and accountability. They expressed confidence in his ability to deliver unprecedented development in Edo State.

Deputy Senate President Senator Barau Jibrin described Okpebholo as “a humble man of action,” stating that his election as Governor reflected the trust and love of the people.

As the valedictory session concluded, Senators affirmed that Okpebholo’s journey from the Senate to the governorship epitomized dedication to public service. They encouraged him to remain steadfast in his vision, carry everyone along, and uphold the values of good governance.
