The UK government on Wednesday announced plans to axe 92 House of Lords seats retained for hereditary lawmakers, resurrecting reform of the unelected chamber started under Tony Blair’s Labour government in the 1990s. King Charles III, opening the first parliamentary session after Keir Starmer’s general election win for Labour, said removing the peers’ right to sit and vote in the Lords was part of “measures to modernise” Britain’s uncodified constitution. Labour won the July 4 election by a landslide, returning it to power for the first time since 2010, allowing it to put its manifesto pledges into law, including the…

Mason Greenwood is due to have a medical before completing a permanent move from Manchester United to Marseille. Sources have said forward Greenwood has agreed personal terms, with a fee, including add-ons, of more than 30m euros (£25.2m) in place around a contract that is set to run to 2029. United have negotiated what they regard as a significant sell-on clause. Marseille were criticised by the city mayor last week when their intentions became apparent. However, it appears they are undeterred and Greenwood is now expected to become part of Roberto de Zerbi’s squad for the coming campaign. Greenwood has…

The Argentina national team’s celebrations after winning the Copa América included a partially live-streamed rendition of a racist chant from the 2022 World Cup, aimed at the France national team’s players. That video, posted by Chelsea’s own Enzo Fernández, has earned them fairly universal condemnation, just as it should — including a terse and strongly worded response from Wesley Fofana. Chelsea are also said to be looking into this incident, “treating the matter seriously” and expected to “handle it accordingly”. It’s not yet clear what that might entail as far as Enzo’s concerned, but for now, the 23-year-old has posted…
King Charles III will read out Labour’s first programme for government in a decade and a half on Wednesday when the UK parliament formally reopens following the July 4 election. Prime Minister Keir Starmer will put turbocharging economic growth at the heart of his legislative plans as Labour runs the UK for the first time in 14 years. “The legislation set out at the King’s Speech will build on the momentum of our first days in office and make a difference to the lives of working people,” said Starmer, who led his party to landslide win over the Conservatives. Despite…
France’s President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Gabriel Attal’s government on Tuesday, which will now serve only in a caretaker capacity, the presidency said. French politics have been in gridlock since an inconclusive snap election earlier this month, with parties in the National Assembly scrambling to put together a governing coalition and no successor to Attal in sight. The outgoing premier and his team would “handle day-to-day business until a new government is named”, the Elysee Palace said. “For this period to come to an end as quickly as possible, it is up to republican…
