The All Progressives Congress and the opposition parties have welcomed on the proposal by the Independent National Electoral Commission to phase out the use of Permanent Voter Cards for election and to also introduce Diaspora voting. Tope Temokun, the lawyer to the detained activist, Dele Farotimi, has dismissed the insinuation in some quarters that Mr Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the last election, was sent to beg Afe Babalola on behalf of Farotimi in the ongoing defamation case. Troops of the 1 Brigade, Nigerian Army, have captured Baka Wurgi, also known as Baka NaGarba, a notorious bandit leader and arms dealer implicated in the murder of the Emir of Gobir, Alhaji Isa Mohammad Bawa, in Sokoto State. The operation, executed on Dec. 14 at 10 p.m., was based on intelligence that Wurgi was receiving treatment at a hospital in Shinkafi, Zamfara State, for severe injuries sustained during a clash with a rival group. Nigeria has met its outstanding financial obligations to the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) which has spanned nearly two decades with one hundred percent payment totaling $85.54 billion. The payment, totaling ₦84 billion and $54 million, covers Nigeria’s contributions for 2023 and extends through July 2024. Ahead of the 2027 general elections, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has denied a report alleging that it has invited former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the presidency under its platform, saying such story remained untrue.
