By Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, SAN A very dangerous message has been circulating online in respect of the law and practice of administration of estates. Let me repeat it for whatever it is worth. IS THE CONCEPT OF PAYABLE ON DEATH (POD) LEGAL? “So ‘Next of Kin’ is useless in the Bank. The real thing needed in the Bank is if you die today, your”Next of Kin” will not have any access to the money in your account!!! So many Nigerians think that their next of kin is the automatic heir to their accounts. But the truth is that if your next…
A driver who killed one pedestrian and seriously injured another while attempting to flee from the police has been jailed. Ryan Skelton, 23, from Bagworth, was driving a blue Volkswagen Jetta on 12th September 2024 when a member of the public alerted police to his erratic driving. Officers approached Skelton on Oronsay Road in Beaumont Leys, but he tried to escape, colliding with a metal fence. He then sped off, mounting the kerb and hitting two pedestrians, Anthony Haynes, 66, and his carer, 56-year-old Rachael Newton. Both victims were hospitalised. Haynes died from his injuries on 23rd September while Newton…
The registration for the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) will now commence on Monday, Feb. 3, instead of Friday, Jan. 31 as earlier slated. Dr Fabian Benjamin, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Public Communication Advisor, disclosed this in a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja on Friday. Benjamin said the change was necessary to allow the Board to implement essential adjustments to its registration templates. “These adjustments came in light of the recent suspension of certain law programmes at selected universities, as submitted to the Board by the Council for Legal Education. “Additionally, the Board discovered that some…
By Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, SAN Very recently, the iconic Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, appeared before the National Assembly to defend the budget of the agency. A lot of revelations came out of that session, especially from the presentation made by the Comrade Senator, Adams Oshiomhole, concerning the 2024 expenditures of JAMB. The allegations revealed by Comrade Oshiomole suggest a lot of atrocities against the agency under Professor Oloyede, such as abuse of power, misappropriation, breach of regulations, profligacy and excessive pampering of members of staff, all at the expense of poor Nigerians. There…
By Kassim Afegbua Most unassuming, practical and down-to-earth; his looks convey grit that is ordained. His words are measured in tone as mellow as an innocent new breed politician trying to imprint his footprints on a political landscape that had become anathema, because of the inactions of his predecessor. He’s trying to rewrite the ugly narratives of his predecessor; for whom profligacy, high-handedness and political volatility dominated the basis of governance. Governor Monday Okpebholo is unruffled by the happenstances of politics, he has become a phenomenon, a lesson, and is seminal in politics today. With a dulcet voice winnowed from…
By Fred Itua Governor Monday Okpebholo has taken a firm and uncompromising stance against the menace of cultism with the passage and signing into law of the Secret Cult and Similar Activities (Prohibition) Law, 2025. This bold step, championed by His Excellency, Monday Okpebholo, demonstrates the Government’s commitment to restoring peace, security, and order in Edo State. For too long, cultism has held our communities hostage. Once confined to academic institutions, cult-related activities have escalated into a dangerous social problem, threatening lives, disrupting businesses, and undermining the progress of Edo State. The Edo State Government, having studied the devastating impact…
By Olawale Olaleye Gaanu si, from rudimentary Yoruba knowledge, is at best a slang expression. There is no exclusivity to its meaning. For such a word, definitions are often derived from personalisation and could be swung in any direction as the user so pleases. But, if you excused that word from the edited video, you could tell that K1 didn’t mean to demean the Alfas or denigrate them. That conversation was essentially about properly situating some aspects of the burial plans. Just listen, again, to his conclusion. While noting that the main Alfas had clearly taken a position and chosen…
Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has decried the way the prevailing security challenges have ravaged Zamfara communities and hamper agricultural production, thereby aggravating hunger and poverty in the agrarian state. The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general elections stated this when he paid a condolence visit to the Emir of Gusau and the people Of Zamfara State in Gusau on Monday. His trip to the North-Western state followed the military strikes in the Tungar Kara community in the Maradun Local Government Area which claimed about 16 lives. Obi who was represented by spokesperson for the…

Los Angeles police captain, Captain Mike Lorenz says at least 20 people have been arrested for looting evacuated homes in Los Angeles, including two people who posed as firefighters. “Looting is an issue, the number of arrests is continuously growing. We even made arrests of two individuals that were actually posing as firefighters coming in and out of houses,” he said. It comes as the death toll from California’s devastating wildfires has risen to 24. Among the casualties was a British former child star, Rory Callum Sykes, who appeared on the TV programme Kiddie Kapers in the 1990s. He died…
