The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a two-week ultimatum to the Federal Government to address the demands of the striking Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) or risk industrial action. In a statement signed by its President Joe Ajaero, NLC said it would not sit idly and watch while the government refuses to honour collectively bargained agreements reached with the university workers. The University of Ibadan (UI) has reclaimed its position as Nigeria’s top university in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2026. The Ibadan-based federal institution is ranked in the 801–1,000 band globally, moving up from fourth place in 2025, and surpassing other leading Nigerian universities—a feat it last achieved in 2023. The surveyed 2,191 institutions across 115 countries, evaluating universities on 18 performance indicators covering teaching, research, research environment, industry engagement, and international outlook. Joseph Aloba, the father of late singer Mohbad, has urged the Lagos State government to initiate criminal proceedings against individuals named in the coroner’s inquest into his son’s death. Mohbad passed away on September 12, 2023, following an injection administered by auxiliary nurse Feyisayo Ogedengbe. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday night departed Yokohama, Japan, for Brazil, where he is scheduled to begin a state visit on Sunday, August 24. According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President embarked on the ultra-long-haul flight to Brasilia with a scheduled stopover in Los Angeles, United States, before proceeding to the Brazilian capital. The Anambra State Government has dismissed eight operatives of the Agunechemba Security outfit over the brutal assault and public stripping of a female corps member, Miss Jennifer Elobor. The Special Adviser to Governor Chukwuma Soludo on Community Security, Ken Emeakayi, disclosed this at the agency’s headquarters in Awka on Wednesday. The Edo State House of Assembly has cleared eight persons nominated as commissioners by Governor Monday Okpebholo. Governor Okphebolo had requested the Assembly to clear the nominees. The Assembly cleared the nominees after considering the report of its Committee on Rules, Business and Government House. In his remark, Speaker Blessing Agbebaku said the nominees were indigenous, competent, experienced, and qualified to occupy the positions of commissioners. The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has mandated that all mobile phones be switched off during flight take-off and landing. The development was announced on Tuesday by the Director General of Authority, Capt. Chris Najomo, while addressing stakeholders in a meeting themed “National Civil Aviation Security Committee Meeting” in Abuja. Najomo stated that all passengers must now completely switch off electronic devices during flights, ending the long-standing “flight mode” practice. Nigerian visa applicants have been warned that omitting social media information could lead to denial and ineligibility. The warning was given by the US Mission in Nigeria in a social media post on Monday morning.
