WAFCON: Super Falcons Eliminated By Cameroon In Quarter Final Clash

Nigeria’s Super Falcons have lost the opportunity to secure automatic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup after suffering a 1-0 defeat to Cameroon in their WAFCON 2026 quarter-final clash.

Cameroon’s Nyadjou scored the only goal of the encounter in the 19th minute, giving the Indomitable Lionesses an early advantage they managed to protect until the final whistle.

The Super Falcons pushed for an equaliser but struggled to convert their chances, with Cameroon goalkeeper Michaely Bihina producing a strong performance between the posts.

Bihina made eight saves as Nigeria repeatedly tested the Cameroonian defence but failed to find the breakthrough needed to take the match beyond Cameroon’s lead.

The defeat ends Nigeria’s direct route to the 2027 Women’s World Cup through the WAFCON semi-finals.

The four teams that reach the WAFCON semi-finals will automatically qualify for the World Cup, which will be hosted by Brazil.

As a result, Nigeria will now have to pursue qualification through the African play-off route reserved for the four teams eliminated at the quarter-final stage.

The Super Falcons’ World Cup hopes, however, remain alive. They will enter the play-off competition alongside the other three quarter-final losers.

Victory in that route would give Nigeria another opportunity to advance to the inter-confederation play-offs, where a place at the 2027 Women’s World Cup could still be secured.

The defeat therefore represents a setback for the Super Falcons but does not end their hopes of reaching Brazil, with the team now facing a considerably more difficult path to the global tournament.
