Commonwealth Games 2026: Why Idi Amin’s Grandson Was Disqualified During Boxing Match

Aziz Abdul, the grandson of former Ugandan President Idi Amin, was disqualified for headbutting his opponent during the Commonwealth boxing quarter-final bout on Wednesday.

Taking a cue from his famous grandfather, who declared himself the “King of Scotland” in 1976 over his fascination for the Oscar-winning film, The Last King of Scotland, Aziz revealed his dream of becoming “the new king of Scotland” upon his arrival in Glasgow.

However, his bid for Commonwealth boxing gold ended in shame after being jeered out of the ring during his match against England’s Damar Thomas in the super-heavyweight division.

Aziz earned a standing count in the opening round despite landing three left hooks after being hit by a short stabbing left by Thomas.

He swung widely throughout the second round, with officials deducting points for continuously punching Thomas in the face as they exited a clinch.

Aziz was given a third and last warning halfway through the last round after headbutting Thomas on the chin, attracting boos from spectators.

Speaking with reporters after the match, Aziz expressed displeasure with the referee.

“This referee’s decision is not right, and I am not happy. “Of course it’s unfair. When you watch the previous fights of England, their boxers create a lot of fouls,” he stated.
