Veteran journalist and former presidential candidate, Dele Momodu says Nigeria is yet to recover from the chaos from Military President Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida plunged the country into by annuling the June 12 1993 presidential election.

Babangida, on Thursday, expressed regret over the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election, acknowledging that the candidate of the Social Democratic Party, MKO Abiola, won the poll.

In the concluding section of the 12th chapter of his autobiography launched Thursday in Abuja, titled, ‘A Journey In Service,’ IBB, who blamed the late Sani Abacha, described the annulment of the election as an “accident of history.”

Admitting his error, the ex-military leader said, “Although I am on record to have stated after the election that Abiola may not have won the election, upon deeper reflection and a closer examination of all the available facts, particularly the detailed election results…there was no doubt that MKO Abiola won the June 12 election”.

Speaking during an interview on TVC, Momodu said he is happy that Babangida is now living with the regrets of annulling the election.

According to him, Nigeria is yet to recover from the chaos that trailed the annulment of the election.

“We must his respect his decision, that is his personal decision and I’m happy that he is living with it and he has taken full responsibility for that action which put Nigeria into total chaos. In fact, I don’t think we have recovered from that action till today”.

“On June 12 1993, Nigerians united  for once to vote for one man without considering religion, ethnicity or anything. And we missed that opportunity. Today, we are fighting on account of religion, ethnicity and all what not. That Abiola election would have sealed it finally that we are one”.
