President Bola Tinubu has commended the Nigerian Super Falcons for their outstanding triumph at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), marking the nation’s record 10th continental title.

In a post-match video call with team captain Rasheedat Ajibade, players, and officials, the President expressed his pride and eagerness to welcome the team and trophy back home in Abuja, according to a statement issued by Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

“I am very, very proud of you. The entire nation is proud of you. You have lifted our spirits. You are a pride to your generation and we are all very happy,” President Tinubu said.

He also congratulated the coaching staff, team management, ministers, and officials involved in the victory, promising the team a grand celebration.

Special recognition was given to captain Rasheedat Ajibade, who earned the tournament’s Most Valuable Player and Woman of the Tournament awards.

The President also praised Esther Okoronkwo for her “very courageous” penalty in the 64th minute, which catalysed Nigeria’s dramatic comeback. Okoronkwo further contributed by creating the second goal and delivering the decisive free-kick that Jennifer Echegini converted to secure a 3-2 win.

“Safe journey home, enjoy yourselves, avoid injuries, God bless you,” the President wished the jubilant team and officials, who repeatedly responded with “Thank you, Mr President!”

In response, Ajibade thanked President Tinubu for approving the full payment of players’ allowances and affirmed the team’s excitement to present the WAFCON trophy to him in Abuja.

The interactive call concluded with a stirring rendition of the national anthem and a triple “Gbosa!” cheer for the President.
