Ondo state governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has promised to do everything within his power to ensure that the state achieves better living standards for the people.

Governor Aiyedatiwa stated that there is undeniable evidence that the state is currently undergoing a new trajectory in socioeconomic transformation.

This includes extensive statewide infrastructural reengineering and strategic human capital development through systematic filling of existing vacancies in the public service.

Aiyedatiwa said there were positive changes in all sectors of the state economy through judicious appropriation of state resources in the most resourceful and efficient manner thereby engendering unprecedented facelift, wealth creation, psychological well-being and prosperity across the state.

He spoke at the inaugural lecture series to mark this year’s Democracy Day with the theme “The State of Democracy in Nigeria: Issues, Challenges and the Way Forward.”

Governor Aiyedatiwa said democracy is alive in the country.

He said his administration was focused and committed to prioritising the socio-economic welfare, security of life and property as well as engendering enduring wealth creation in the State as catalyst for statewide prosperity.

National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, Senator Surajudeen Bashiru, who delivered the lecture, urged Governor Aiyedatiwa not to oppose the federal government suit on local government autonomy.

Senator Bashiru called for a review of the Nigeria constitution to allow states determine the structure of governance at the local level.

Bashiru identified issues impeding growth of democracy to include electoral integrity, judicial efficiency, good governance, corruption ineffective local government administration and institutional weakness.

He said the slow pace of reforms and political interference has continued to hinder progress.
