Spain international Mikel Merino has completed his move from La Liga side Real Sociedad, signing a long-term contract with Arsenal.

The 28-year-old midfielder, known for his versatility and tactical intelligence, leaves Sociedad after a six-year stint, during which he made 242 appearances, scored 27 goals, and provided 30 assists.

Merino, who began his professional career with Osasuna before winning the German Cup with Borussia Dortmund, brings a wealth of experience and a winning mentality to his new club.

A statement from the Arsenal website on Tuesday, titled “Mikel Merino Signs for Arsenal on Long-Term Deal,” confirmed the transfer.

Sporting Director Edu said, “We are thrilled to have completed the transfer of Mikel Merino. This has been another great team effort from many people at the club to finalise the transfer of a player who attracted interest from several clubs over the summer.

“Mikel was a key target for us this summer, and we identified him as a player who can fit perfectly into our squad and enhance our team, as we aim to build on our strong performances from last season. With Mikel’s arrival, we gain additional high-quality experience, physicality, and athleticism as we look forward to the season ahead.

“We welcome Mikel and his family to the club and look forward to seeing him play in an Arsenal shirt.”

Mikel Arteta added, “Mikel is a player who will bring immense quality with his experience and versatility. He has played at the highest level both club and international, for several seasons. Mikel will significantly strengthen our squad with his technical ability, strong character, and positive personality.

“As we saw in the summer, Mikel is also a winner, with his outstanding performances throughout the Euros helping Spain win the tournament. We are delighted to welcome Mikel and his family to the club and can’t wait to start working with him.”

Mikel will wear the number 23 shirt and immediately join his new teammates at the Sobha Realty Training Centre.

Transfer Analyst, Fabrizio Romano reported on his X account that the deal was for four years.

“🔴⚪️🔐 Official, confirmed. Arsenal sign Mikel Merino for €32m plus €5m in add-ons, four year contract with option for one more season.

“Merino only wanted #AFC move despite two more proposals in Spain, Arteta had him on top of the list. Deal sealed,” he posted.

Merino will be reuniting with fellow team mate at Sociedad and now Arsenal captain, Martin Odegaard.
