The Abia State Government has given reason it sacked the vice chancellor of the state-owned Abia State University, Uturu (ABSU), Professor Onyemachi Ogbulu, revealing that his sack was based on the outcome of a Visitation Panel instituted by the government on the university at the inception of the Governor Alex Otti’s administration.
The state Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, who dropped this hint in Umuahia said the government has earlier assured Nigerians during the submission of the panel’s report that it would implement without hesitation the recommendations of the panel’s report.
The commissioner explained that the state government approved the release and publication of the White Paper on the school in line with its pledge, even as he announced Professor Ndukwe Okeudo as the new vice chancellor.
According to him, the government also approved a new management team and Governing Council for the university.
Prince Kanu stated that other appointments included Rt. Hon. Agwu U.Agwu PhD, Pro Chancellor, Mrs. Cathrine Uju Ifejika as Chancellor, Dr. Onwubiko Dike as member Governing Council, two Deputy Vice Chancellors, four members of Senate, two members of the congregation, one member of Convocation, a representative from the State Ministry of Tertiary Education and a new Bursar.
The appointments, he remarked, are to take effect from November 1, 2024. The information commissioner added, “You are aware that the visitation panel was put in place with a view to ascertaining the problems the university has and coming up with solutions.
“The first in the series of reforms that would take place there has commenced with the appointments that have been made”.
