State chairmen of the Labour Party (LP) in Nigeria’s North Central Zone have inaugurated their respective Directorates of Mobilisation and Integration Committees as part of a strategy to attract 20 million new members ahead of the 2027 general election.

The initiative follows a directive from LP National Chairman, Julius Abure, who has set the goal of registering 20 million new members before the next election.

In a statement released on Saturday, LP’s National Vice Chairman for North Central, Ibrahim Idoko, said the inauguration ceremonies, held across the region on Friday, were peaceful and well coordinated.

The events, according to the release, were witnessed by the party faithful, with the state chairmen reading the national chairman’s speech on Abure’s behalf.

Abure emphasised the importance of early preparation for the 2027 elections, stating, “The fire brigade approach adopted by the party in the 2023 general election can obviously be avoided.

“I believe strongly that if we start planning from now for the 2027 general election, it will be better for the party and for all those who truly and really want a New Nigeria.”

He added, “A New Nigeria will not be possible without a strong and virile political party with a structure robust enough to defend our votes and what the New Nigeria stands for.

“We must continue to rebuild our party, restructure it, and make it stronger to achieve the Nigeria of our dreams.”

Abure also called on party members to be more active, adding, “All those persons who are in Labour Party but are not courageous enough to bring their friends, relations, and followers to be members, but still wish to use the party platform to win elections, need to rethink.”

Idoko introduced the State Coordinators and Secretaries for the Mobilisation and Integration Committees: John Kwaghza (Benue), Kenneth Sunday (FCT Abuja), Philip Yakubu-Pam (Plateau), Ablaku Anthony (Nasarawa), and Ibrahim Sanusi (Kogi).

Idoko urged the new committees and party members to stay loyal and disciplined, working toward the 20 million-member target set by Abure.

He expressed confidence in the new leadership, stating, “With the inauguration of these Directorates in North Central, our party will win future elections with a landslide.”
