APC Dismisses Atiku-Obasanjo Alliance, Says It’s No Threat To Tinubu

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has downplayed the significance of a recent meeting between former President Olusegun Obasanjo and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, stating that it poses no threat to President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.

The meeting, held at Obasanjo’s residence in Abeokuta, Ogun State, saw Atiku leading a high-profile delegation, including former governors and political figures. While the details of their discussion remain unclear, there are speculations that it may be linked to Atiku’s political ambitions.

When questioned about his visit, Atiku described it as a “courtesy call” and refused to discuss politics. However, sources indicate that talks about a potential political coalition were part of the agenda.

In response, APC National Secretary Ajibola Basiru dismissed the meeting as insignificant, labeling those involved as “indolent politicians.” He emphasized that APC is focused on governance and upcoming elections, particularly the Anambra governorship poll.

Basiru further stated that the ruling party is not concerned about opposition meetings, as it remains a solid and crisis-free political force. He insisted that APC’s priority is implementing President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

This meeting comes amid ongoing discussions about political alliances ahead of the 2027 elections. Atiku has previously called for opposition parties to unite against APC, warning against the country becoming a one-party state.

Obasanjo has in the past supported Atiku’s presidential bid, particularly in 2019, but the former vice president lost to then-incumbent Muhammadu Buhari.

Meanwhile, other political actors have weighed in on coalition talks. Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has expressed openness to alliances but insists they must prioritize good governance rather than just political power.

His party, however, appears divided on the matter, with Labour Party’s spokesperson stating that coalition talks are not currently on their agenda.

In contrast, the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has expressed openness to alliances, saying that any coalition led by a credible leader like Obasanjo could bring hope to Nigerians.

As Nigeria moves closer to the 2027 elections, political maneuvering is expected to intensify, with parties and key figures strategizing for the next major contest.
