Former Military President, General Ibrahim Babangida on September 15, 2010 declared his intention to contest the 2011 Presidential election.

Babangida, later wrote the then national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Okwwesilieze Nwodo, to formally announce his withdrawal from the presidential primaries held on January 13 2011.
The presidential election, held on April 16 2011 was won by Goodluck Jonathan of the PDP who defeated General Muhammadu Buhari of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC)
