England captain Harry Kane has confirmed he is a strong contender for the 2026 Ballon d’Or, but insists the final decision rests with the voters.
In an interview with Owen Hargreaves set to air on HBO Max, the Bayern Munich striker addressed his standing among football’s elite, acknowledging the intense debate surrounding the sport’s most prestigious individual award.
While the 32-year-old recognizes his place in the conversation, he emphasized the subjective nature of the accolade, noting that differing opinions on player attributes—from pace to football intelligence to finishing ability—fuel the annual discussions.
“The thing with football opinions—there are so many opinions, so many arguments for different players, and people love this player because ‘he’s fast’ and ‘he’s got great IQ’ and ‘his finishing is great’,” Kane told Hargreaves.
“So I think that is what makes football special, all those debates, and the Ballon d’Or is definitely one of them. I’m happy that I am in contention, so we will have to wait and see.”
The winner will be determined by votes from international journalists, national team coaches, and captains, with the ceremony scheduled later this year. Kane, who has enjoyed a prolific season for Bayern Munich, remains one of the leading candidates as speculation intensifies over who will succeed the current holder.
