Opposition parties secured several councillor seats in Saturday’s local government council elections in Bauchi, a state in Nigeria’s North-East zone, controlled by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) administration of Governor Bala Mohammed.

Samira Maikano of the Young Progressive Party (YPP) was elected as councillor for Wandi Ward in the Dass Local Government Area.

She won with 1,610 votes, defeating her closest rival, Bashir Abdullahi of the PDP, who received 1,352 votes. The All Progressives Congress (APC) also garnered 230 votes.

The results were announced by Returning Officer Nasiru Hassan at the ward level.

In Darazo Local Government Area, Yunusa Muhammed of the African Action Congress (AAC) won the Papa North Councillorship Seat with 1,156 votes. He defeated Ashiru Muhammad of the PDP, who received 1,053 votes, and Idris Muhammad of the APC, who got 290 votes.

Announcing the results, the Returning Officer Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar said, “Yunusa Muhammed of the AAC, having satisfied the requirements of the law and scored the highest number of votes, is hereby declared winner and is returned elected.”

In the Bogoro Local Government Area, the Labour Party received the highest votes in Lusa Ward, despite not fielding a candidate. Lucy Yusuf of the PDP, the second runner-up, was declared the winner. The Labour Party received 2,200 votes, the PDP 2,168 votes, and the APC 275 votes. The result was declared by Returning Officer Daniel Gambo.

A total of 323 candidates contested for councillor seats in the state from 10 political parties.

Results for the chairmanship elections are still pending and will be announced by the Bauchi State Independent Electoral Commission.
