As the hunger protest is set to begin on Thursday, Senate President Godswill Akpabio has made light of the event, suggesting that the organisers should proceed with their demonstration while he and others continue to eat.
Akpabio made these remarks on Tuesday during a meeting with delegates from the Niger Delta Development Commission in Rivers State.
Expressing dissatisfaction with the planned protest, Akpabio referenced the comments of the commission’s Managing Director, who stated that the Niger Delta region is not seeking a change in government.
“All of us feel the impact of the current situation, but we understand it will be temporary. MD, I appreciate your remarks. You’ve indicated that there is no interest in regime change; instead, we should support this government,” Akpabio said.
He continued, “Those who wish to protest can do so, but we will be here enjoying our meals. I want to thank the Niger Delta region.”
Akpabio acknowledged the environmental damage caused by oil and gas activities in the region and assured that the National Assembly is prepared to assist with legislation to address oil spills and pollution. He emphasised that specific issues affecting the Niger Delta will be included in a communiqué to be presented to the President.
“The matters requiring legislation will be directed to us, those needing intervention will be handled by the NDDC, and issues requiring additional funds will be forwarded to the President,” he said.
In related developments, Akpabio has called for an emergency Senate meeting ahead of the protest, scheduled for August 1 to 10.
A notice from the Senate Clerk, Chinedu Akubueze, stated that the meeting, deemed of “National Importance,” will be held on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, at 12 noon. The internal memo did not provide further details on the agenda for the emergency session.
