Organisers of a children’s funfair in Ibadan, Oyo State, where several people were feared dead in a stampede on Wednesday, have been arrested. The incident occurred at Islamic High School, Basorun, during a family event.

Governor Seyi Makinde confirmed the arrest of the organisers and announced that investigations are underway to determine the cause of the tragic incident. He expressed his condolences to the victims’ families and reassured the public that security measures have been implemented to prevent further casualties.

In a statement shared on his official social media account, Makinde said, “Earlier today, an incident occurred at Islamic High School Basorun, leading to multiple fatalities and injuries. This is a deeply sad day for us in Oyo State, and our thoughts are with the parents who have lost their children.”

He added that steps had been taken to secure the venue, with security personnel and medical teams dispatched to the site. The event was immediately halted, and attendees were safely escorted out. The governor confirmed that those responsible for the event will face legal consequences.

“The organisers of this event are in custody, and we are committed to holding those involved accountable,” Makinde said. He also extended his sympathies to the affected families and wished peace to the deceased.

The funfair, which was set to host thousands of children, was organised by Queen Naomi Silekunola Ogunwusi, ex-wife of the Ooni of Ife, in collaboration with Agidigbo 88.7 FM. The event was intended to provide entertainment and prizes for children across Ibadan but turned tragic due to the stampede.

Authorities are continuing their investigation into the cause of the stampede.
