The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) community is mourning the loss of its Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Professor Abdulgafar Siyan Oyeweso, who passed away at the age of 64.

A statement from his younger brother, Olawale, confirmed that the distinguished professor of History died on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, following a brief illness.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father and brother, Professor Abdulgafar Siyan Oyeweso,” the statement read. “He departed this life at the age of 64 and will be greatly missed by his family, students, and colleagues.”

“Professor Oyeweso was a renowned educator and mentor, leaving a lasting impact on countless students and political associates throughout his career. He is survived by his wife, children, and other family members.

“His remains will be laid to rest in his hometown of Ede today at 4 PM, after the Islamic afternoon prayer, solat Ashri.

“May Allah grant him Aljannah Fridous and comfort the family and loved ones during this difficult time,” Olawale added.
